Punk Jews Week One
The first week of shooting for our next round of “Punk Jews” episodes is behind us. We don’t want to give all of our stories away but we shot some heavy moments while covering the fight against child abuse in orthodox communities, and some lighter segments when we visited a Yoga Jedi Jewish contortionist from space, as well as the fight to keep Yiddish Theatre alive – we met some amazing people this week, all pushing boundaries and being generally inspiring and badass. We even got to meet Jerry Stiller at David Mandelbaum’s one man show, “Yosl Rakover Speaks to G-d” for the Yiddish theatre piece. We’re not exactly sure if he’s a Punk Jew or not but he was awesome.

Cool hunting and kickstarter
The Kickstarter fundraising campaign officially ended at midnight last night. A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who donated and supported the series. We were more than successful in raising funds for the project so that can only mean an even more awesome Punk Jews series will be coming at you in the near future. Stay tuned to this spot for upcoming developments as the series kicks into high gear.
Also in news, CoolHunting.com has a great write up on the Punk Jews documentary series, including a clip of Golem performing at the Punk Jews concert on June 19th. For those who didn’t make it, check it out and see what you missed! For those who were there, you already know you should be watching it. Click here to check it out.
Know a Punk Jew?
Are you or is someone you know a Punk Jew? We’re looking for the greatest and most dynamic stories out there of Jews owning their heritage. Creative types and activists of all kinds are welcome.
If you think there is someone out there we should know about, please contact us at Evan@PunkJews.com
The Jewish Week and Thank You
Punk Jews was on the cover of The Jewish Week this past week. Look around and you might be able to still find a copy, or you can read the excellent article here.
The Punk Jews concert and party on 19th was a success and we want to thank all of you for coming out and sharing it with us. Thank you all the amazing bands and volunteers who donated their time and talent, our hosts the Sixth Street Community Synagogue, and our co-sponsor The New Yiddish Repertory Theater.
You can read an excellent account of the party on Michael Croland’s “Heeb n Vegan” blog.
And remember, our fund raising campaign on Kickstarter.com is still accepting donations through July 6th!
EVENT is SATURDAY JUNE 19th
The nonsense list messed up the date for us – the show is SATURDAY, JUNE 19th 930 PM. Cant wait to see you guys.
Golem Added to PJ Event June 19th!
Fresh off their tour of Mexico, Eastern European Folk-Rock band Golem has been added to the June 19th Punk Jews party and concert. The Jewish Week said of Golem, “This is not your father’s klezmer band… Unless your father was Sid Vicious.” Check out their music here. For more information on the Punk Jews event, click here or check out the facebook event page here.
In other news, the Punk Jews fundraising has currently reached $8,266 with 28 days to go! Please continue to donate and spread the good word to your friends. Check out the trailer and donate here.
30 Days to Go!
This is the home stretch! Only 30 days left to contribute to the project! We have raised $7,704 out of our $10,000 goal. Unless we raise the entire $10,000 by 7/6 no one will be charged for their pledges and we will receive nothing! (and wouldn’t that be a shame). So if you haven’t contributed anything yet please help us meet our goal.
We have gift offerings for backers of all levels. Whether it’s $1, $5, $20 or more, any amount that is comfortable for you to give would be greatly appreciated. Please support our project so we can inspire the world with compelling stories about people creatively expressing themselves through culture and spirituality. PLEASE DONATE HERE.
Also- new developments on the party and concert Saturday night June 19th. We’ve just added TWO more bands to the line-up, EDEN and BLANKET STATEMENTSTEIN! Check out their links and see all the details of the show below!
